IMN CSIC
Join the FINDER group at the Institute of Micro and Nanotechnology (IMN‑CSIC) to develop and apply picosecond time‑domain thermoreflectance (ps‑TDTR) for precision measurements of thermal conductivity (k) and interfacial thermal conductance in advanced materials. The project sits at the intersection of ultrafast optics, heat transport, and materials engineering, with direct relevance to nanoelectronics, energy harvesting, and thermal management.
What you will do
- Build, align, and operate a ps‑TDTR setup for thin films, polymers, and nanostructures. We also have a Laser-flash and a photoacoustic system to cross-check some of the measurements.
- Perform thermal modeling, uncertainty quantification, and data analysis.
- Automate measurements and analysis in Python/Matlab; manage instrument control.
- Prepare samples and transducers (e.g., metal coatings), and collaborate on material fabrication.
- Communicate results through publications and conferences within an international network.
What we look for
- Eligibility for the European predoctoral program and enrollment in a PhD (upon award).
- MSc (or equivalent) in Physics, Materials Science, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, or related fields.
- Hands‑on experience in optics/laser labs and/or thermal transport is a strong plus.
- Solid programming and data skills (Python/Matlab), analytical mindset, and excellent English.
What we offer
- A 4‑year FPI predoctoral contract (subject and salary fix by the national call and rules).
- Competitive conditions per Spanish regulations, access to state‑of‑the‑art labs, and mentorship.
- A dynamic, collaborative environment at IMN‑CSIC (Madrid) with opportunities for high‑impact publications and industry collaboration.
- Stays in collaborator labs abroad.
How to apply
- Send a single PDF to finder.imn-cnm@csic.es with subject “FPI‑psTDTR‑FINDER”.
- Include: 1‑page cover letter, CV with GPA, transcripts, and contact info for 2 referees; links to preprints/software are welcome.
- Indicate your earliest start date. Expressions of interest will be reviewed on a rolling basis; the formal application will proceed through the official FPI portal when it opens.
Equal opportunity
- FINDER and IMN‑CSIC are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.
